Consistent use of emblems
Description
All projects on GitLab and Matrix have the ability to add an icon. Right now, these are very inconsistent and might not represent the app well, or can be unclear at small sizes. The icons at the moment are mostly the fullcolor app icon, an autogenerated random color with a letter in it or a symbolic icon with a background (an emblem). For consistency and branding, it would be nice if all those icons are consistent and well thought out.
The main benefits from using an emblem over other options are:
- Visibility - The GitLab and Matrix icons often are rendered very small. Symbolic icons, which are used in emblems, can keep the icon recognizable at small sizes.
- Adaptiveness - The GitLab and Matrix icons can either be a square or circle. A full sized icon can be partly cropped in its edges, a zoomed out emblem does not have this problem.
Emblems can also be easily generated with the app Emblem. For aforementioned reasons, I propose to make use of these emblems in all apps that are part of GNOME.
Goals
- Create an emblem for all apps that are part of GNOME using Emblem, or by adhering to its style.
- Use these emblems as icon for both the respective GitLab repos and Matrix rooms.
Scope
Infrastructure (GitLab, Matrix)
People on charge & contact
Instructions to achieve the goals
Label for tracking the initiative
Text for the initiative issue in projects
Apps without existing emblem
Many GNOME apps or libraries have an emblem, consisting of a symbolic icon on a background, that is used for their GitLab page and Matrix room which helps with their branding. It would be nice if APPNAME also uses this emblem style on both platforms. See #36 for more info.
Below are some examples of how an emblem could look like. When in use, they will be circular or have rounded corners.

Apps with existing emblem
APPNAME currently has an emblem in use on GitLab/Matrix. For consistency it would be nice to see this emblem also being used on GitLab/Matrix. See #36 for more info.

How can I help
- Find apps/rooms that do not make use of an emblem
- Create an issue for apps that do not use an emblem for either their GitLab repo or Matrix room
- Brainstorm on possible emblem designs for aforementioned issues
