Refresh the system monitor / usage designs
The latest usage / system monitor designs are super old - we need something newer to guide gnome-system-monitor and/or gnome-usage.
I know that @chergert has thoughts on this, particularly when it comes to technical contraints. We should take those as a starting point.
Goals
- Allow diagnosis and resolution of performance problems
- Short term issues
- Long term issues
- As they are occurring
- After they've happened
- Allow someone to gauge if their hardware is sufficient for the current workload
- Be usable and meaningful for those with little technical knowledge
- Also work for those with more technical knowledge - should be transparent to those who know how Linux systems work
- Don't make a bad situation worse - if performance problems are happening, don't significantly add to them
Types of performance issues to cover:
- CPU
- Memory
- Disk I/O
- Network bandwidth
Open questions
- Should it cover disk space? Should the app replace the Disk Usage tool?
- Should it cover battery health?
