Original description:
Hi, I am a non-technical user & my English ability is limited.
I am a Linux user (Ubuntu-Linux) and I deal with a large volume of photos, and a huge collection of photos. let me tell you my experience using Shootwell, and F-Spot, and what should be improved on Shootweel:
I know F-spot (quite) well, although I do not like the software, its design and its language (Mono or C# – for political reason). However in term of usability, F-sport features are coherent.
Shootwell – I am using – seems in-between 2 logics. From my perception Shootwell was designed with Events (aka catalogs) in mind. That was interesting. Later on Shootweel implemented a Tagging system (in the F-Sport manner).
My assumption is Event (catalog creation) was too complicated for the average user, while anyone can right click a photo and write a tag.
I like the shootwell catalog. if the catalog feature is properly used it is faster and tagging is redundant. Why no taking a stand and choosing either Catalog (original) either Tagging as development path?
It classification system makes a difference when dealing with large photo stocks. For this matter Shotwell lacks a the F-Spot logic: Let me detail and compare with F-Sport by points:
I) Importing new pictures:
The current way Shotwell import new picture is appending them to the existing collection.
There is no way to isolate the newly imported pictures to make a selection.
The user has to scroll up or down to find the newly imported pictures among is collection. (I have a collection of ~80000 pictures, it makes a simple operation “import and select†operation very difficult).
F-Spot uses tag system. All the photos are tagged (in a well ordered collection). When importing new pictures, they are also appended to the current collection but there is a simple option to HIDE pictures with tags. Since my new pictures are the only ones without tag, they will show up alone, and I will be able to make my selection.
This should be standard usage on Shootwell: A feature to isolate new imported photos not part of a Event or Tagged (hence, Shootwell should rely either on “tags†either on “eventsâ€. Relying on 2 methods of classification for the same purpose makes the selection options above confusing).
II) Staring System:
The way F-spot allows mass photo selection is simple. It has a staring system from 1 to 5 stars.
When I have a set of new imported photos:
a. I isolate them from the rest of my collection (feature: hide tagged photos), so only the new photos appears.
b. I apply 1 star to the best photos
c. I apply 2 stars to the good photos
d. I apply 3 stars to the photos I have to review (keep/trash)
e. I set my filter “show unstarred photos†+ Ctl+A and Delete
f. I set my filter “show 3 stars pictures†and I make a new selection
F-Sport star selection feature is remarkable for mass photo selection.
Shootwell, offers “one star†as favorite option. The process of selecting photos is complicated:
a. Import new photos
b. Create a new event (to isolate them from the rest of the collection)
c. Star the photo I want to keep (only one choice – all or nothing)
d. Show only the starred photo
e. Select hide the photos
f. Then, finally, I can see the photos I plan do discard and make a second selection.
This is complicated and not productive. Shootwell should implement a easy selection system and rules selection to show or hide starred photo (in the F-Spot).
disclaimer: the purpose of my message is not to offend a (sensitive) developer, nor to make the apology of another software (F-spot). Shootweel is already great and the implementation of the database is very stable (compared to F-spot), however a picture management software also need to let the user see/select and organize his collections quickly. Shotweell needs improvement in this way. Forgive me if my my post lacks accuracy.

nomnex,
Thanks for your ideas and suggestions. Your English seems just fine!
It's true that we first implemented events and then tags in Shotwell, but we don't think these features are redundant. Events are for organizing photos by the time they were taken, and tags are for organizing photos according to their contents (for example, I can use a tag “Bill†for all photos containing my friend Bill) or in other ways. In fact, we plan to enhance Shotwell to include other trees in the sidebar as well, including a file hierarchy tree (#1594 (closed)) and a geographic tree (#1473 (closed)). At that point you'll be able to browse photos according to their time (using events), place (using the geographic tree), file location (the file hierachy tree) or contents (using tags). We also plan to implement a filter/search capability (#1587) that lets you combine these in arbitrary ways – for example, you'll be able to search for all photos taken in Australia in 2009 that contain your friend Bill.
Regarding your point 1: Yes, we completely agree that it's too hard to find the pictures you've just imported in Shotwell. We have a ticket (#897 (closed)) to implement a sidebar item which shows you all the photos you've just imported. At some point we might even implement another sidebar tree which lets you browse photos by the batches in which you imported them (#1793 (closed) loosely suggests this idea).
Regarding your point 2: The 5-star rating system is popular among photographers and I think we'd like to implement it in Shotwell as well (this is #1878 (closed)). Once we do this, you'll be able to filter the view by star rating just like you can in F-Spot.
I'm going to mark this ticket as a duplicate, since I believe that your suggestions are already covered by other open tickets. If you have further questions or suggestions, don't hesitate to get in touch either by appending to this ticket or emailing us directly. Thanks!
