2-in-1 device: Must get device right-side-up before `SW_TABLET_MODE` transitions to 0
What I am about to discuss is (IMO) related to !1846 as well as the issues linked from there, but distinct, in the sense that my hardware ("Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 7390") appears to report SW_TABLET_MODE
as designed, but (again IMO) the user experience as of Gnome Shee/Mutter 42.2 (installed from Debian, package version 42.2-1 in each case, in case it matters) is poor.
The current implementation seems to simply stop responding to orientation changes when transitioning to "laptop mode". I need to get the device "right-side up" before the hinge switch triggers laptop mode, or else I'm stuck with a display pointed (possibly) sideways. I use this device for teaching, and this happened to me in front of my students, to their great amusement. In the situation, but also in general, I did not find this failure mode to be particularly discoverable. It might have helped if the "laptop mode" orientation had been forced to "right-side up".
This issue was split out of #2319.
