No/generic icon for uninstalled applications, e.g., AppImages
Affected version
- OS and version: Fedora 40, Ubuntu 24.04
- Affected GNOME Shell version: GNOME Shell 46.1
- XOrg and Wayland
Bug summary
For applications which are not installed, e.g. AppImages, the application icon is not shown for running applications, only a generic icon. On Fedora 39 / GNOME Shell 45.5, the correct application icon is shown.
Steps to reproduce
Can be reproduced with any application that runs without installation, for example GVim as AppImage:
- Download GVim AppImage from https://github.com/vim/vim-appimage/releases
- Make it executable and run
- Click the activities button or press the super key
What happened
Only generic icon for application is shown.
What did you expect to happen
Correct icon should be displayed.

Notes:
I know that this could be fixed by adding a .desktop file to ~/local/share/applications (for example, a similar issue was once reported for Emacs in issue 5739), but for applications which should run without any installation and/or further changes to the system, I do not consider this a valid solution. Also, as this has been working in Gnome shell 45.5 and earlier, I consider this a bug.
