Switch from borg to rustic
After learning about Pika Backup for the first time today1, I just did a bit of research, including stumbling upon #176 (closed). I must admit I'm simply amazed about the fast pace of innovation in open source software these days.
Some interesing discoveries:
-
Deja Dup already has basic support to use restic as its backend (as an alternative to duplicity). This issue talks up restic and outlines better UI integration (which would bring Deja Dup on par with Pika Backup UX-wise, I guess). The author of the issue thinks that "Restic is definitely better than Borg" but unfortunately doesn't go into details.
-
There is an independent Rust implementation of restic named rustic which already features considerable improvements over restic.
Since Pika Backup is also written in Rust, rustic would seem like a natural fit. My bet would be that rustic will have a brighter future than the Python+C-based borg.
