Indications of running backups for external drives
Hi!
It would be really useful if, every time Pika is running a backup, especially when running in the background, there were some layers of indication of activity and progress. Examples: a clear and active warning to not unplug the external drives to which a backup is on-going; unobtrusive progress indication; and continuous unobtrusive indication that a backup is running.
The warning not to unplug drives, and continuous indication, are especially crucial when backing up to external drives so we don't end up unplugging them in the middle of the process and end up corrupting data.
Especially when talking about scheduled backups, as we might not realize a scheduled backup is running.
Right now, there seems to be no indication — at least on my system —; the backups just quietly start running the in background.
Implementation ideas:
- An [optional] notification when starting a backup to an external drive, as an active warning not to unplug that external drive — example "/!\ Backup starting... Keep 'External Drive A' plugged in!";
- In combination with the warning above, a system tray/quick settings icon, providing us with a continuous but unobtrusive reminder. When a backup fails, the system tray icon changes to a warning icon variation and an option open the app and check what happened. When the backup successfully concludes, the system tray icon disappears.
Additionally, in the quick settings, there could even be a button with quick options such as "Snooze", "Cancel", "Skip" and "Settings";
Side note: I heard there's a new "run-in-the-background" portal or something coming up? Maybe that could help provide the functionality?
