Too slow and unreliable
Used Deja Dup for years, but I am finally on the verge of giving up. My primary issues are:
- Speed
- Reliability
- Configuration
Speed It takes over 3 days to do a full backup of less than 800Gb. This is apparently because the volume size is set to a small value, which has some advantages, but makes full backups painfully slow.
Reliability My 3-day backup failed right at the end when my router briefly went down. Instead of offering to resume the backup once network connectivity was restored, it failed the backup and started all over again. This is just unacceptable - and is the primary reason I will be exploring alternative solutions.
Configuration I understand Gnome apps like to be simple and free from lots of configuration - and I also like this. But there is such a thing as too little configuration available. Because Deja does not let you schedule a time for backup, it either tries to backup when I'm using the system for something else, or doesn't backup when it is actually available. I managed to go nearly 200 days without a backup being achieved - and I don't want to trigger these things manually - it should mostly be set and forget. The fact that it is so unconfigurable actually makes it harder to achieve reliable backups - which is an absolute requirement for a backup solution.
I hope this does not come across as unnecessarily critical - but backup is just one of those things that has to work reliably without needing lots of attention - and Deja Dup is not meeting that basic requirement for me.
