Unable to backup automatically in Elementary
Summary
When I first installed Deja Dup from flatpak after upgrading to Elementary OS 7.0, it had automatic backups enabled (perhaps due to inheriting a previous config). But I noticed after several days it wouldn't run.
Reproduction Steps
I tried disabling and re-enabling the "back up automatically" option in the UI, and when re-enabling, I get a message:
Cannot back up automatically
Make sure Backups has permission to run in the background in Settings > Applications > Backups and try again.
There's no such thing in Elementary OS app permissions, but after some digging I found I can use Flatseal instead to expose all flatpak permissions options. The problem is, the background portal in Flatseal is grayed out for all applications. After some digging for a command line option, I couldn't find anything obvious, e.g., using flatpak override
to enable the program to run in the background.
