User manual, better guidance
Hi,
I've just installed Apostrophe.
Some features are fairly intuitive and obvious due to their pictorial nature, e.g. activating split views for the previewer, and changing themes through the Burger Menu.
Though, there are some features with no explanation to be found; and with little context to work with. For example:
- Burger Menu -> "Hemingway Mode" -- What does this do? It seems to be an obscure reference to an American writer..., and
- Burger Menu -> "Preferences" -> "Input format" -- OK, we can choose between different flavours of Markdown, but what is the difference between them? Must I trawl through the docs for each and work it out myself?
Also, why are there so many steps just to change the format? I may want to quickly switch the format, depending on the given document -- why not give one-press access (as opposed to three, whilst navigating disparate menus) -- perhaps an "Input Format" button could be placed next to the "Preview" button?
I don't know what the GNOME project's recommendations are, though here are some suggestions:
- Hovering over options should provide tooltips (e.g. this would surely assist some users trying to discover the meaning of "Hemingway Mode").
- The should be a help manual of some sort (ideally offline), to complement the tutorial. Currently, users are made to go through:
Burger Menu -> "About Apostrophe" -> "Apostrophe website" -> "Learn More" (apps.gnome.org website) -> GitLab README.md.
Unfortunately, after making these four(!) hops, they are merely confronted with build instructions.
Thank you
