The great purge
Currently the HIG feels too big. There are too many pages, and some of the pages are too long. This makes the guidelines less approachable and harder to use.
Right now the new version of the HIG is primarily made up of material from the old HIG. Before we start rewriting, it would be good to decide what we can drop. Suggestions here would be welcome!
Ideas:
- App basics - this was from a time when there was a lot of misbehaviour from apps, where they wouldn't follow basic rules (odd multi-window apps, apps with multiple launchers, etc). Maybe we don't need it any more.
- Pattern descriptions - each pattern includes a textual description of the UI involved. This feels like stating the obvious in many cases, particularly if there's an image of the UI in question.
- "When to use" sections. Again feel like stating the obvious. We previously wanted this to be a standard pattern for all the pages but it ended up feeling like boiler plate.
- Guidelines on fixed tabs. Do we use these anywhere any more?
