Enhancing GNOME Events Experience: Encouraging Sponsored Attendees to Volunteer
As we reflect on the recent GUADEC 2023 event and the valuable discussions that took place, I'd like to address an important topic that emerged during the conference. It is related to the engagement of completely sponsored attendees in volunteering activities.
The GNOME Foundation has been consistently dedicated to supporting students and first-time attendees by sponsoring their participation in GUADEC and other GNOME-related events. This initiative has allowed many individuals to experience the event's vibrant atmosphere, learn from industry experts, and contribute to the GNOME community.
While the sponsorship program has undoubtedly benefited numerous participants, there's been a noticeable trend that needs our attention. When the Call for Volunteers is announced, we often observe that those who have been fully sponsored appear hesitant to sign up for volunteer tasks. Instead, individuals who have scheduled talks and workshops tend to take on additional volunteering responsibilities, potentially burdening themselves amidst their already busy schedules.
During the recent GUADEC 2023, a thoughtful discussion arose around this issue. The conclusion that emerged is that sponsored attendees should contribute by volunteering for at least one day during the event. This collaborative effort not only distributes the volunteering workload more evenly but also leads to a smoother flow of the event overall.
Details about volunteering opportunities and how to sign up will be communicated in advance of future events, ensuring that everyone has the chance to participate and contribute in a meaningful way.
What are your thoughts on this issue? While we can't compel anyone to volunteer, it should ideally instill a sense of responsibility.
