String freeze exception request: GNOME Settings -> Remote Login (remote desktop) settings
Rationale
The work to support Remote Login depended on changes in gnome-remote-desktop and with that it needed some polish before it was ready for merging, hence the delay on finishing this work before the beta.
The Remote Login changes are in this MR GNOME/gnome-control-center!2182 (merged)
As a consequence, 10 new strings would appear in the application.
I also requested a UI freeze exception for these changes at Teams/Releng/freeze-breaks#173 (closed)
Strings
The new strings are…
-
Desktop Sharing
(this is the new name for our remote assistance feature that avoids using the term "Remote Desktop", which overlaps with the features in "Remote Login"). -
Share your existing desktop with other devices. The remote connection uses the existing screen resolution
This appears on top of the "Desktop Sharing" page. -
Allows desktop shares to control the screen
(this string was reworded, but it is a description of the "Remote Control" toggle that we already had on the previous version). -
How to Connect
(this is the header of a section of our UI). -
Use a remote desktop app to connect using the RDP protocol. Additional information about the device's network location may also be required.
(this is the description of the "How to Connect" section. This was changed to contain more information about the protocol, in order to hint users how to connect to a GNOME machine, considering all the caveats with remote-desktop protocols, hostname resolution, ip address access, etc...) -
Login Details
(this is the header of the section where we show the desktop sharing credentials) -
Generate New Password
(this is the text of a new button)
Here you can see most of these strings in a screenshot:
Additionally, we added the "Remote Login" page, which added the following strings:
-
Remote Login
(the name of the page and its main toggle. This was already a string in GNOME Settings, but now it refers to something else, elsewhere in the UI. Changes are that this will be marked as fuzzy by translation tools).) -
Remotely connect to your user account when it isn't being used. The display resolution can be set from the remote
(this is the description of the page in the UI). -
Port
(this refers to a network port, also likely a fuzzy string)
Below you can see most of these strings in a screenshot. Notice that the "Remote Login" page reuses most of the strings from the "Desktop Sharing" page.
