What is the Engagement Team
- The Engagement Team is responsible for promoting the works of the GNOME Project, maintain Community Efforts such as Marketing, Events, and more.
- We maintain numerous projects, such as the GNOME Website. (The website falls back in the Marketing Section)
- You can read more about the team and our efforts on our Wiki
Why we need help with web development
- Like an open-source project, we aren't just about shipping the GNOME Shell, GTK, and the Apps codebase. Documentation, Translation, and all other efforts are as much important.
- GNOME is a huge project, but we always lack manpower and contributors.
- Such as we need contributors for the GNOME Project, we need contributors for all other Web activities, such as the GNOME Extensions Website, GNOME.org, The GNOME Wiki, and many other websites.
- We're currently in serious need of some help with web development!
What are the currently open projects
Some of the current projects that need immediate help from a web development perspective are:
- GNOME.org website refresh (Not the full redesign) (Not a GSoC project)
- The new GNOME Websites CSS Framework hat will be the foundation of the new GNOME.org website (Not going to be used on the website refresh but on the actual redesign of the Website that will come in the future) (Repository Link)
- The Faces of GNOME initiative (Repository Link)
- GNOME Extensions Rebooted (Blog Link)
Where we stopped on them
- GNOME.org website refresh is made in WordPress with the same Theme used on shop.gnome.org. It currently lacks some of the pages of the GNOME.org website. The next steps are to finish the incomplete pages and add the missing pages. It doesn't require many web-development skills, but more like content-writing skills since we need people to put the content there. But web development skills come in handy. Claudio and Caroline are managing this initiative.
- The new GNOME Websites CSS Framework is a half-way to be completed. It already has some basic elements like fonts, buttons, and others, but there are still many UI components remaining. This will also probably be a GSoC 2021 project, but for now, we need contributors immediately to help with its development. Claudio and Caroline are managing this initiative.
- The Faces of GNOME initiative is completed. There are just a few pages and things missing, including data. This is one of the initiatives we want to ship in 2021. It's at least 70-80% completed. Claudio is managing this initiative.
- The GNOME Extensions Rebooted initiative is being managed by Yuri and Sri, they know better what's the progress. You can check on the #extensions channel. They need help with developing the new extensions web page.
What are the next steps
- GNOME.org refresh: Continue to update the pages and put the missing pages and missing content. Some CSS improvements are needed
- GNOME Websites CSS Framework: Work on the open tickets (Issues) and finish the next components and current incompleted ones. Also, improve the current documentation system
- Faces of GNOME: Work on the open issues (tickets) finish the development and design of it and add the missing data
