Workspace Indicator in the middle
This is obviously not a final design. But it solves a lot of issues (See the list below the mockup picture). Hopefully, some ideas from this mockup inspire an actual designer to come up with something more acceptable.
The proposal (and the issues it solves)

Swap placement of clock and workspaces indicator pill (But keep hot corner where it currently is, i.e. top-left)

Move dash to the top (Solves pointer travel distance issue)

Move workspace thumbnails above the search field (So users can open apps, files, etc. in a different workspace while searching)

Additionally,
- Turn dash into an intellihide/autohide dock that shows up on hovering on workspace indicator
- Show the dash/dock by default on empty workspaces
(Minimizes the amount of clicks required to launch an app and doesn't suffer from the issues that a bottom dock would)
