Search action/button is hard to discover
An anecdote from Matrix:
FWIW in a recent user testing session (warning warning, anecdote with sample size of 1) the (advanced) user could not work out how to search in Software, until they tried Ctrl+F and the field appeared. They didn't see the magnifying glass icon.
Despite the sample size of one, conclusions can still be drawn that while the top left is theoretically a prominent location for putting actions, the design of software is such that one's attention isn't drawn to that area; the app content of Software is mostly centered in the various views such that one's attention never goes to the upper left (especially when Software is maximized).
Additionally, search is supposedly an important part to application discovery which means if there is difficulty finding the search action, there is difficulty in discovering applications.
Other app stores (on iOS and Android) have search much more prominent as a part of the Software installation/discovery experience, do we want to follow suit with Software?
While type-to-search is available in Software, it's arguably not intuitively part of the search experience--it would have to occur to users that they are able to do this, which it may not be if no UI to perform a search is obvious to them. Plus, if your only keyboard input is via an OSK which isn't always present, type to search is not helpful to you.
