Power off and restart options
The current shell power off / restart options include a fair amount of functionality:
You could say that having blocking users, blocking apps, and updates avaialable is an extreme situation, but it's also possible for there to be multiple apps and multiple users listed - so it could theoretically be worse than this.
These dialogs also include the boot options easter egg: if you hold down Alt, "Restart" is replaced by "Boot Options". Pressing "Boot Options" then restarts the machine, then shows the grub menu after restart.
Issues
- The layout isn't great when there's all these alerts and options shown
- The dialog can get rather complex and overwhelming
- The boot options easter egg is very hidden. I wonder who knows about it. Also, the "Boot Options" button behaviour is surprising. I expected it to show the options immediately, but it restarts the machine.
- Other options that it would be good to include:
- Boot to BIOS
- Boot to another OS, if one is available
Exploratory design
I recently sketched this, in an effort to add the next boot option, and deal with the layout and population issues:
However, this is still fairly complex, and it ignores the boot to boot menu and boot to BIOS options. Is there a better option for those, which doesn't involve the restart menu? Are the app inhibit and other user logged in alerts necessary?
