GNOME Sound Theme
The XDG desktop sound theme has been with us for a good while, it might be worthwhile figuring out a whole new range of sounds for GNOME at some point that modernize the beeps and boops the system makes for feedback.
Biggest blocker to this is just getting someone to make or source a cohesive set of sounds.
Relevant Material/Documentation/Issues
- current freedesktop sound theme spec: https://freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/sound-theme-spec/
- issue for updating the sound panel alert noises: GNOME/gnome-control-center#264 (closed)

Open Questions/Problems
- would we want to have an exhaustive list of sounds that goes beyond the spec?
- how would we allow people to change sounds for various things, like alarms, ringtones, notifications, etc.?
- speaker test sounds are not localized, it's an english-speaking voice saying the speaker position. having a neutral sound for this would probably be more ideal than "translating" the sound files.
