Inclusion & Diversity Goals for the GNOME Foundation
One of our long term goals is to create a healthy and vibrant GNOME community. I (Nuritzi) was part of the original board who helped to define this goal, and one of the things we mentioned is that this is the goal that would capture our Inclusion & Diversity goals.
This task is meant to help spark action so that we create some short-term goals around Inclusion & Diversity. Here are some ideas for how the Board can help:
- Opportunity grants - set aside funding for newcomers to come to our main conferences. Higher preference could be given to people who come from underrepresented groups in our community. Apart from just the money, perhaps we could dedicate staff time to helping people apply for the grants and also helping them with things like visas or anything else that they need.
- Event Content - set aside budget for certain speakers who identify as people from underrepresented groups, or pledge to have workshops. Make it a requirement that organizers of our big conferences comply with a checklist of things that make events more inclusive. eg. display CoC prominently and announce it during certain speeches, make sure there are gender neutral bathrooms, make sure that there is childcare, etc.
I'm sure there are many more. As part of this, we would want to establish some goals for the Foundation, find a way to measure the success, and implement it.
