Description
A Steam Controller configuration for GIMP is something I'm actually working on. It doesn't require any coding or libraries, it can just be done with how the control is remappable. The reason I'm posting this here is because I wanted to know if anyone else would be interested in using this feature, or has any input, advice, or thoughts.
The Steam Controller is a cross platform, customizable video game controller made by Valve. Why am I adding support for this? Because it comes with 2 nice touch pads, and as an amateur artist, I'm hesitant to commit to a tablet, but maybe I can fingerpaint with this. If I have this thing lying around, maybe someone else who uses GIMP does too. The controller has surprisingly deep potential as an interface. There's a deeply customizable Configurations feature to allow different controls for different games or applications. All buttons can be reassigned to various keyboard/mouse inputs, pop up menus, or even switching between entirely new "action sets" (aka entire button mappings). On top of that, it's easy to share the custom configurations you create, so many games have great community shaped controls.
Currently I've made a simple version for painting with just the tools I use mapped to the face buttons, but I've seen the depth of possibility here. Anybody else wanna explore this with me?
