Mouse selection broken when changing screens

Description
Please describe the problem: When using GNU screen, and changing between windows (ctrl-a a etc), sometimes the mouse starts malfunctioning in one window. For example, the first window works as usual and I can select and copy text. When I change to another window, the cursor is now a pointer instead of the text selection curser. If I click or try and mark some text in the window, I instead get some garbage at the input and no text is selected. If I use the restore option in gnome-terminal, it works again until I change window and then it stops working again. I'm using gnome terminal 2.18.1 and vte 0.16.8 on Gentoo Linux AMD64
Steps to reproduce:
- Start a screen
- Create several windows
- ? (I don't know what this step is, sometimes it works fine)
- Change between the windows
- Try to mark some text
Actual results: Instead of selecting the text, you get some garbage printed in the terminal.
Expected results: The text would be selected.
Does this happen every time? No, not every time. I havn't figured out exactly when it happens yet.
