We did some experiments with an SDHC card using the current trunk build of Shotwell.
With a laptop with a built-in card reader slot, if Shotwell is running when the card is inserted or removed then Shotwell doesn't notice; I have to restart Shotwell for it to see the card. I see the same behavior when I use a USB card reader and I insert or remove the SDHC card from the card reader device.
If I use a USB card reader and first insert the SDHC card in the reader and then plug in the USB cable, Shotwell does not notice. When I unplug the USB cable, however, Shotwell does notice and removes the card from the sidebar.
