Original description:
Feature request: Allow specifying place of database file e.g. by a command line option or, this would be even nicer, by an item within the application's preferences.
To make things clearer follows a short description of the usecase and the expected behaviour: I use an external USB harddisk (small and lightweight) for storing my photo collection in order to be able to take the photos to my friends or edit them at my main machine, at my laptop and so on… What I want is to store the photos as well as the created database file (and everything else that is needed for proper function) on this external harddisk. If so, I could plug the disk into my laptop, then import some photos there from my camera and do some edits (using Shotwell on this machine) and finally move to my multimedia pc and show the already imported photos (e.g. in a dia show) on this second machine using Shotwell again.
F-Spot was able to do this by specifying the path to the database file as a command line option (however, F-Spot was no option for me due to perfomance issues). Similar should be possible with Shotwell. A more sophisticated way would be the use of a local configuration setting within Shotwell (or maybe, since this is a poweruser feature, in GConf).

This might be related to Ticket #1076 (closed) “Allow User to manage multiple picture librariesâ€. A really cool user experience then would be, IMO, a dialog where one can pick from several existing databases if enabled. The default behaviour should be the use of the default database without user interaction, of course.

Got tired of mucking with directories to make sure I wasn't putting my personal library at risk as I developed code. This is only a command-line version, a la:
shotwell --datadir=~/.test
If further sophistication is required, please ticket or re-open.
