It would be nice to be able to search for unrated photos. I don't believe this is currently possible.

Forgot to add, though this would add some complication, it might be nice to be able to include unrated in the various searches, i.e. 4+ and unrated (since unrated photos might be good).

- Category set to library-mode
- Status changed from Open to Need Information
You can't do this now with the standard search bar, but you can with saved searches. Try Edit -> New Saved Search -> Rating is Unrated only.
We specifically tried to make the top search bar to be quick and easy to configure for the most common searches, while saved searches deal with more complexity. Is this sufficient for your needs?

Thanks the saved search helps a little, but my preference would still be to allow filtering unrated.
What would you think of checkboxes in the rating dropdown for the various ratings? There are 7 possible ratings, 1-5 + unrated + rejected, and currently 8 options in the dropdown (also, I'm a fan of the no boxes checked = all boxes checked in this case). It would also make quick filters such as "1 or 2" possible (rather than 1+).

- Subject changed from Filter on Unrated Photos to Search bar should support more complicated Ratings searches
- Status changed from Need Information to Open
That might be a good way to go. I would want to have some mechanism for clearing all other selections, so that the user doesn't have to uncheck a lot of boxes. In other words, if the user drops down the box and starts clicking Ratings checkboxes, that forms a complex query. But if they click once on the Rating itself, it clears all other checkboxes and checks that one (i.e. acts like it does today). That gives a way to preserve existing behavior while adding more powerful searches.
I'm updating the title to reflect this idea.
