I'm not really sure when it happens, but pretty often Shotwell shows two identical application buttons in the Launcher, however only one instance is running. See the screenshot.

Is this because you have Shotwell open in library-mode (where you see your collection of photos) as well as using it as a photo viewer (i.e. you double- clicked on a photo in Nautilus)?

No, I only use it in the library mode. And no other window is open, I'm sure about it. Maybe it's a Unity bug, but I've never noticed this with other programs.
