Original description:
Almost all photos in my collection have titles. However, only some photos have the titles written into files, even though I have checked that option in the preferences.
Some photo come from my camera, some from friends, some are scanned, and it seems either all or none photos in an album (that always come from one particular camera) have metadata written into file. I have all photos backed up on my phone (N900), and I use (g)rsync to transfer new pictures from my phone, where I put them into an album in shotwell, write a title and then transfer them back to my phone via the same method. However, all photos from my phone seem to have metadata written into them.
It is possible that I mistakenly overwrote photos with metadata written in with photos with no metadata written in as I once found out that some titles disappeared from shotwell database (whole album were titleless). I recovered using photos I uploaded on-line and some bash scripting with exiv2. Shotwell picked up the title, but it seems it deleted (I have no other explanation for that) the captions from the files.
This is on todays trunk. I collected a logfile that covers me untagging whole library that I previously tagged with a tag. That should trigger a metadata write but nothing got written. However, when I create a new title, it seems to get written. The same goes when I delete a title of a photo and then write it again - the metadata get modified. However, they do not get modified unless triggered manually. I am maybe writing in follow up to this: http://lists.yorba.org/pipermail/shotwell/2012-June/004020.html
