To automate datetime adjustment:
Let shotwell display a QR code which changes at least every minute. Then the user makes a photo of the computer screen and then imports this photo. Then it's possible for shotwell to 'known' the difference in datetime (and the camera make/model for which this applies).

I'm not aware of any photo applications with this feature yet.
