Original URL: http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/7355
Searchable id: yorba-bug-7355
Original author: Sebastian Olsson
Original description:
I want to import the photos and video from a Kodak EasyShare MAX Z990. Shotwell imports the thumbnails. Among the photos, there is a 6 minute mp4 video. When Shotwell comes to this, the thumbnail import pauses shortly and then resumes much slower. When it is done, the thumbnails for all photos after the video are wrong, see attached screenshot. When clicking the "import all" button, I get an error message about not being able to lock the camera (see the other attached screenshot). The error code is -1.

Sebastian,
Thanks for the report, it certainly seems like something's amiss. Could you try to follow these steps: http://redmine.yorba.org/projects/shotwell/wiki/ShotwellFAQ#I-found-a-bug-in- Shotwell-How-can-I-report-it
and attach the resulting logs to this ticket?
Thanks,
-Joe

- File shotwell.gdb added
- File shotwell.log added
See attached files.
I am running Shotwell 0.14.1 on Elementary OS 0.2 "Luna".

Sebastian,
Did you import the files and see the bug while you were making this log?

Yes.

- Category set to camera
- Status changed from Open to Need Information
Are you sure you ran Shotwell like this?
$ SHOTWELL_LOG=1 gdb shotwell 2>&1 | tee shotwell.gdb
I ask because your log file seems oddly empty if an import operation occurred.

OK, I did it again in case there was some mistake. Is it better?

This helps, although I don't see any mention of the MP4 in the log, which is a head-scratcher. Otherwise, these items seem to be the cause of the problem:
L 331 2013-08-20 00:36:07 [DBG] ImportPage.vala:1335: Unable to find base directory for KODAK EasyShare Z990 Digital Camera fsid 0
L 331 2013-08-20 00:36:07 [WRN] ImportPage.vala:1534: Unable to fetch metadata for /DCIM/100KZ990/100_6032.JPG: [-107] Error retrieving file object for /DCIM/100KZ990/100_6032.JPG: Okänt fel
L 331 2013-08-20 00:36:07 [WRN] ImportPage.vala:1572: Unable to fetch preview for /DCIM/100KZ990/100_6032.JPG: [-107] Error retrieving file object for /DCIM/100KZ990/100_6032.JPG: Okänt fel
One more thing you could do: turn on titles (View -> Titles in English) so you can see the filename of each photo and then connect the camera again. My questions are:
- Do you see the thumbnail for 100_5980.JPG?
- Is 100_6032.JPG the first image after the MP4?
It looks like the video is throwing either Shotwell or gphoto2 (the camera library Shotwell relies on) into a bad state.

Yes. The photos 100_5980.JPG - 100_6030.JPG all have previews. Then comes 100_6031.MP4 and 100_6032.JPG - 100_6048.JPG have no preview.

Are you comfortable building and installing from tarballs? I ask because we've seen that gphoto 2.5 is a marked improvement over older versions. However, if you do that, you have to build and install it, then build and install Shotwell.
Latest libgphoto2 is at http://sourceforge.net/projects/gphoto/files/libgphoto/2.5.2/ Shotwell 0.14.1 source can be downloaded at http://www.yorba.org/download/shotwell/0.14/
