IMHO it could be better to have rotate counterclockwise as defult because default behaviour when shooting vertcal pics is to rotate the camera this way.
If you look for example at iPhoto on OSX it uses counterclockwise rotation as default (you can change this in settings).
I already know that you can use counterclockwise rotation with ctrl+click on rotate button.

Actually, when it comes to the "right" rotation to offer, the reason iPhoto has a Preferences for this is because it depends on the camera. I've updated the ticket title to reflect this.
