Original URL: http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/6218
Searchable id: yorba-bug-6218
Original author: Beorn Leonard
Original description:
Due to the fact that Shotwell uses Gnome's online accounts feature, anyone who doesn't have gnome (a growing community who are sick of ubuntu and gnome 3) cannot publish to facebook and other online services from Shotwell.
I use Mate as my desktop and when I select "add more accounts" in the publish dialogue it fails silently.
There should be an option to enter account details manually, or list gnome as a dependency, or at the very least a message should pop up that publishing without gnome installed is unsupported.

I think there's some slight confusion here. Shotwell doesn't use GNOME Online Accounts (GOA), it still uses its own internal authentication code. However, Ubuntu patched Shotwell to use their Ubuntu Online Accounts (UOA), which is the version I suspect you're running. We've had reports of similar problems when running from other Ubuntu variants (Kubuntu, Xubuntu) when the UOA Control Center is not installed.
My recommendation would be to install Shotwell from the Yorba PPA. This is our version that doesn't use UOA or GOA: https://launchpad.net/~yorba/+archive/ppa
If you would prefer to use the version you have, you'll need to install the UOA Control Center.
We are considering moving to UOA/GOA support, but if we do so, we want to make sure this kind of problem doesn't arise: #5596 and #5597.
Let us know if this solves your problem!

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the prompt reply. Indeed using the yorba ppa fixes the issue. So I guess the issue really lies with Ubuntu, who who don't list UOA as a dependency for their patched version.
I for one hope Shotwell maintains its independence from Gnome and Ubuntu, as it's a very useful app, and there are many of us who prefer to use more streamlined desktops like openbox, xfce and mate.
Thanks again

Yeah, this was something they supposedly fixed a while back. Don't know if that migrated down to Mint. More information at Ask Ubuntu: http://askubuntu.com/questions/215249/xubuntu-upload-photos-to-facebook-or- picasa-via-shotwell
