It would be useful to be able to select photos by the directory they are in. I needed to do this, for example, to remove duplicate photos from the library. The duplicates were all in the same directory.

Are you talking about a view in Shotwell where you can see the photos organized by their directories? If so, this was reported in #1594 (closed).
If not, could you explain further what you're envisioning?
