Original description:
Hi All,
I have a quite large collection of photos stored on a file server on LAN. It is mounted into a subdirectory in my home folder and photos are organized into a folder structure like this: YYYY/MM/DD. I wanted to use Shotwell so I initialized it to use the collection's current directory for my photo collection.
It took a lot of time to complete this operation so after a whole night work I shut down my PC. Next day evening I started to continue the initializing the collection. It took another half day to complete the remaining work. But after all I realized that almost all folders on the sidebar has been duplicated: no duplicated photos just folders. For example now I have 5 pictures in folder '11/23' but there is another '11/23' folder beneath with all other photos that have been taken on that day.
I see that there is an option to merge folders but it seems to be an endless work with such a large collection.
I think the shut down and resuming the initializing progress originated the problem. Can I somehow repair the shotwell database?

This is by design. New events are created for each import rather than associate new photos with existing events. This was by design initially, but later we decided that we'd like to associate imported photos, which is ticketed at #3565 (closed).
As far as your current database, no, there's no easy solution here. I can only recommend either merging all the events by hand or removing all the photos and importing them again without interruption.
