Original description:
As you can see in the attached screenshot, it is basically impossible to see whether the filter icons ("Photos" [actually meaning "JPEG Photos"], "Videos", "RAW Photos", "Flagged"...) have been depressed to activate the filter or not. For example, is the "flagged" filter here activated or not? It is, but the difference between states is extremely subtle.
I am using Shotwell on Ubuntu 12.04 with the default themes.

I agree that this is annoying. It's particularly annoying because we had styled everything to look just fine early in the 0.12.x development cycle when we ported to Gtk+ 3 (which uses a completely different, CSS-based system for widget styling). That said, we did most of this work on the Precise alpha and beta releases, and the theme engines have changed substantially since then. Put succinctly, so long as Canonical continues to evolve the Unico theme engine in relatively dramatic ways, we'll need to keep a close eye on style imperfections in the app.
Marking for 0.13 and upping to high.

I just looked at this with the default Ambience theme in Quantal. I agree that the contrast between states could be improved, but I think this is livable for 0.13.
