Original description:
Immediately after Shotwell has scanned a camera for images, if the mouse is moved over the Mass Storage Device icon, the icon will automatically appear attached to the mouse. This occurs without clicking on the icon, simply hovering. You can then move the mouse and see "Mass Storage Device" moving across the screen. Once you click the mouse, "Mass Storage Device" disappears from the mouse and the mouse functions as normal. This has been repeated several times.

I see this too. To make this happen, you don't actually have to move the mouse over the camera icon itself. If you move the mouse anywhere in the sidebar then the sidebar item gets stuck as Laura described.
This is pretty annoying. We should fix this for 0.12 if possible.

Also occurs on Fedora 17.

I think it's not so clear that this is related to that bug, since there is no drag operation involved here.

I agree with Clinton that this is related to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=672256. While there is no readily apparent drag operation here, begin_drag_move( ) is called internally by the Gtk.TreeView widget as part of its automatic DnD management in response to button press events on the TreeView window. Marking as blocked.

According to the bug tracker, this was fixed. We should attempt to reproduce this. If unable to, let's close this ticket.

The stickage no longer happens with the version of GTK being delivered as part of Ubuntu 13.04 (no code changes in Shotwell).

I never see this on Quantal either, so is it possible this was only a problem with the version of Gtk+ that shipped with Precise, or have you observed it on Quantal too? If it only occurs on Precise, I think we can close this ticket.

I just verified that it does not occur on a fresh of Quantal (unity, liboverlayscrollbar, globalmenu, theme set to ambience, etc); shall we close as worksforme?
(As for Precise, short of manually updating GTK, there's no way to fix or work around it; recall that we get a begin-drag event, but no corresponding end- drag...)

Reason: only broken on Precise at this point; please see the rest of the comment thread for details.

Reopening, since at least one user has seen it on Raring Ringtail.
Jason, thank you for alerting us. How recent is the ISO you installed 13.04 from?

Jason: thanks again; we'll investigate this as soon as we can.
Please note: because the bug is actually not in our code, but deep beneath the surface of GTK (please see the linked bug on the GNOME Bugzilla site), our ability to control or work around it may be somewhat limited. That said, we are aware that it detracts from the user experience quite a bit, and, if it does turn out that there's a tidy workaround, we'd certainly consider it.

Of course and thanks for looking into it again. Feel free to share the video upstream also if you think it would help.

Sorry to bother you again, but here's one more question for you: what version of GTK have you got installed? (This can be found via Ubuntu Software Centre or Synaptic.)
Comment 26

The version of libgtk-3-0 I have is 3.6.4-0ubuntu6
Comment 27

Jason, thank you.
According to this GNOME bug report , it should have been fixed as of mid-April last year, and definitely in time for 3.6.4 ; I'll retest later today when I wipe and reinstall - perhaps there's some other element to this that we missed.

We should try this with GTK 3.8. If it doesn't, we need to either re-open or file a new ticket with the GTK project.
