I know Shotwell is non destructive : http://www.yorba.org/shotwell/help/edit- nondestructive.html
That's a good idea : I don't want my original photo to be modified by default.
But for photo rotations (Feature #4239 (closed)) and red eyes modification, I would like to apply them physically (if I open my photo in gnome file manager (nautilus), the changes are not taken into account).
It would be great to have an option (a button for example) "apply changes physically", which applies all the changes on the selected original photo (with a confirmation message).
Alternatively, in preferences, maybe add a checkbox "apply changes physically" (I don't want to write tags and other metadata, but I want to apply changes).
What do you think ?

This is essentially a duplicate of #1933. More comments are welcome there.
We're also considering writing all changes to photos automatically, as you suggest as an option. This is #1798 (closed). If we do this, we might rename the original photo file so that it's not lost; that would allow us to write changes but still essentially be non-destructive.
