Original description:
When I import paired JPEG and RAW photo files from my camera, Shotwell treats them as RAW+JPEG files. If I first copy the files to a folder and then import from the folder, Shotwell treats the RAW and JPEG files as separate photos. I think the behavior should be the same in both cases, especially if this discrepancy exists even when the user imports files from a SD card (I haven't tested that case since the laptop I'm using at the moment has no SD card slot).

We've had numerous requests for this - see e.g. this thread:
http://lists.yorba.org/pipermail/shotwell/2011-August/002740.html
We should implement this somehow for 0.12.

We recently noticed that this actually does work already (accidentally?) when importing files, not folders - see #4079 (closed).
There are two challenges in implementing this more generally:
-
We're not sure whether users will absolutely always want to import RAW and JPEG files with corresponding basenames as RAW+JPEG pairs. Perhaps some users have JPEG photos with the same names as RAW photos but they weren't actually generated by a camera - for example, they could have been generated by a command-line program such as UFRaw. Maybe those users wouldn't want those photos to be paired. This concern may be only theoretical, however.
-
It seems like importing RAW+JPEG pairs through auto-import might be tricky.
Given that #4079 (closed) works, is there still some chance we might be able to implement this for 0.11.1, excluding auto-import? If it's easy, that might go a ways toward making users happy.

Let's at least put this on the table for 0.11.1, since we have one situation where it works.
