Dominik, would you mind creating and attaching a Shotwell log file showing a reproduction of this issue?
Info on how to do this is here:

The bug looks little different today, last days the progress bar stayed at 0, but today it stops in the middle.

Note that this bug has been reported on Lucid, which Yorba doesn't officially support. It can certainly stay open in the bug database, but investigating this may not be a high priority for Yorba.

Last days importing did not work, even on single core.
I installe ubuntu 11.04 on the affected box, hope this helps.

After starting shotwell cosumes some time 100% cpu (on dual core box, so using one cpu). maybe this is connected to the bug.

Dominik, is Shotwell hanging or crashing? Looking at one of your gdb traces it looks like Shotwell crashed in the same place as has been reported in #4172 (closed).
Looking at another, it appears to be a similar problem as #4181 (closed), namely the background scan is taking a long time to complete and is competing for time with the import.

Let's take a look at the logs and see if anything jumps out at us. This might be so old we can't do anything about it.

Dominic, this is such a particular problem, we've had trouble reproducing this. Can you reproduce this problem still? What version of Shotwell and Ubuntu are you on now?

Import hangs on Ubuntu 13.04 with Shotwell 0.14.1 while loading via USB from a Canon EOS 450D camera.
After the camera shuts off automatically, Shotwell is back again with no photos imported.
Just tell me what data you need for further investigation and I will happily provide it :)
Setting SHOTWELL_LOG=1 continues with import where normal logging hangs :)
I see multiple entries like this:
L 6818 2013-05-06 20:58:08 [WRN] ImportPage.vala:1572: Unable to fetch preview for /store_00020001/DCIM/100CANON/IMG_2138.JPG: [-6] Error retrieving file object for /store_00020001/DCIM/100CANON/IMG_2138.JPG: Nicht unterstützte Funktion

L 6818 2013-05-06 20:58:09 [WRN] Directory Thumbnail, entry 0x0201: Data area exceeds data buffer, ignoring it.
I see gray images with a red strikes circle for this images.

That sounds like a gphoto problem. What version of gphoto do you have on your system?

libgphoto2-2 2.4.14-2 (Standard Ubuntu 13.04)

You might try upgrading to libgphoto 2.5.2, which includes some important fixes. I don't know if it fixes problems with your particular camera, however.
