in f-%(=il)spot%, some of my tags were containing slashes (e.g. House/Garden or Nature/Landscape). Since shotwell uses slashes to produce a tag hierarchy, it cannot handle this.

Hi,
Thanks for reporting this! This is indeed a bug, because Shotwell
includes code that "sanitizes" (i.e. removes forward slash characters
from) tag names on import. Shotwell does this on import from the
filesystem and auto-import, but it doesn't properly run the
sanitization code during F-%(=il)Spot% import. I've ticketed this issue
here:http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/4108
