Original description:
Some kinds of images, like panoramas or HDR shots, are assembled from multiple source images. For example, 6 source photos can be stiched together to create a single panorama image. For composite images like these, it would be nice for Shotwell to be able treat all the individual constituent images of as a unit, much like how we treat RAW+JPEG pairs as one unit today. This is related to feature #2090 (closed) ("photo stacks") and might share implementation code with it, but the intent of this ticket is different.
From Ian Molton on the mailing list:
I shoot a lot of pano and HDR shots.
I'd love to be able to tell Shotwell that x source photos belong to y
'processed' photos (I'd like to be able to have shotwell show several
exposure configurations or projections for the input files).
To be clear, I dont want shotwell (for now) to handle generating the
pano/hdr shots - merely to have it collate the source images and present
a choice of views of the finished image - let hugin or whatever do the
hard work.

I think this is similar enough to #2090 (closed) (photo stacks) that we may as well just have one ticket. Specifically, I believe that in Aperture and Lightroom, you can select an arbitrary group of images and stack them together; if we implement that then it will work both for this use case and for the use case in #2090 (closed). So I'm marking this as a duplicate. If you disagree, feel free to reopen and we can discuss more.
