Original description:
Since Shotwell 0,8, it is now possible to write metadata directly into photo file (#1290). However, this is not yet possible for video file.
It would be great to add this functionality when video's format allows it.
It would allow to use these tags in other application than Shotwell (better interopability) and if I lost my Shotwell database (because I don't remember to save it when changing my computer for instance), I won't lost all my video's tags.
It is at least possible for:
-
MP4 files, as indicated here: http://www.semanticmetadata.net/2008/03/07/metadata-for-the-mp4-container/
-
MOV files, and you can use XMP manager if needed: http://grigio.org/xmp_manager
Related issues:
- related to shotwell - Feature #1879 (closed): Metadata in sidecar file (Open) duplicates shotwell - Feature #2851 (closed): write time/date and other metadata to video files (Open)

It might be tricky to write metadata to all video formats, soalternativelywe might write metadata to sidecar files instead (#1879 (closed)).

Yes, its is effectively related, thanks!

But in this case you won't address the first aim of this bug report: improve interoperability…

Sidecar files may improve interoperability as long as other applications can read them too. I hope we'll be able to write sidecar files in a cross- application format such as XMP.

I'm marking this as a duplicate of #2851 (closed) and expanding that ticket to include the possibility of all metadata, not just date/time.
