Original description:
When importing a folder, it would be great to have an option “ln†instead of “cp†for copying the photos into the shotwell photo folder.
Typically, for the very first importation (when you switch from another photomanager to shotwell), you want to import all your photos, which are on the samre harddrive. If you have 30G, it taked time and space for nothing.
I understand it is not “keep it simpleâ€, but it makes a real difference when importing.

How is this different from “import in placeâ€, which Shotwell already supports?

It is very different : import in place will keep the photos where they are, without using the shotwell directory pattern.
The option I suggest will do exactly like copy (will create /%(=caps)YYYY%/MM and copy the photos inside), except it will only copy inodes, not filecontent (which is huge).
After that, if I want, I can remove my old photo folder, the photos will be in shotwell directory only.

Oh I see. So you want the option to move photos on import.
I could see a use-case for that, assuming the photos are on the same partition.

Yes, a kind of, but it is not a real move : I want to keep the photos in the old place too
Typical case : I want to test shotwell and demo to someone else, keeping temporarily their old software, so their old photo directories (if they want to keep their old software, they can without any impact).
If it's ok, then I can remove the old directories (and the result is like a simple move, but in 2 steps).

Sounds like e a very specific use case for a very specific user!
Since this wouldn't be something our users would find generally helpful, I'm afraid I'm going to have to mark this as a wontfix.
