Original description:
On a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 (Shotwell 0.9.2) after having restored my photos from backup (12K+), the initial start of Shotwell starts auto importing the images. I stopped Shotwell after about an hour when it had not yet completed the auto-import because I wanted to install another (unrelated) package.
When re-starting Shotwell after this interruption, the auto-import kicked off again, yet now started creating duplicate events. E.g. I would see “Fri 4 Mar, 2011†listed twice under “Events / 2011 / Marchâ€. This appeared to happen to any photo being auto-imported the second time around – a new event date was created independently of that event already existing.
My “workaround†was to delete the Shotwell database, and leave it running over night without interruption – but would be very nice if the auto-import could recover gracefully when interrupted.

Maybe this is “working as designed
Have just tried importing photos from two of my cameras – and to my annoyance separate events are created for each camera for the same dates. Thus, it would appear that Shotwell in general does not check for existing event dates when importing photos.
Is there any way to merge two events for the same date into a single event? Or am I stuck with duplicate event dates for every import I do?

Yes, this behavior is by design. When you import from two different cameras, you'll get different events for each camera. I've always had mixed feelings about this, though, and I think we should now consider importing photos into existing events rather than creating new events for each import. I think that will probably make more people happy more of the time. I think the auto-import scenario you described strengthens the case for this too.
This is closely connected to #1940.
It's certainly possible to merge events with the same date into a single event. Select the month containing that date in the sidebar, Ctrl+click both events and then press the Merge Events button. Obviously it's a pain to do this for every event after an import, though.

I'd really like to see this for 0.14. I commonly use two different cameras (a cell phone and a point-and-shoot), and I really don't want separate events for photos I take with each camera.

I used this "feature" to split events, because I didn't know how to make a new event... BTW: I still think "event splitting" feature should be more visible to the user - http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/70
