To see the problem:
Start Shotwell on Ubuntu 11.04, running from a terminal window.
Click on any sidebar item to go to any view other than the default Media view.
Press Ctrl+1 to set a rating filter of one star or higher.
You'll see the following on the console:
(shotwell:17105): LIBDBUSMENU-GLIB-CRITICAL **: dbusmenu_menuitem_property_set_variant: assertion `DBUSMENU_IS_MENUITEM(mi)' failed
The assertion failure occurs whether or not you have the indicator-appmenu package (which enables the global menu) installed.

Looks like this occurs only in trunk, not in 0.8.1.
