Original description:
To see the problem:
Make sure that the option to write metadata to photo files is set.
Give a photo a title. Shotwell will write the title to the photo file.
On the command line, use 'exiv2 -pa' to print out the photo's metadata. You'll see that the title is stored in the@Iptc.Application2.Caption@and@Iptc.Application2.Headline@tags.
Use exiv2 to change the photo's title like this:
% exiv2 -M"set Iptc.Application2.Caption newtitle" -M"set Iptc.Application2.Headline newtitle" the_photo.jpg
Shotwell doesn't notice the change, and still displays the old title.
Restart Shotwell. Shotwell still doesn't notice the change.
It would be nice to fix this for 0.8 if possible, but if this is hard we could defer to 0.9.

How quickly do you make the change on the command line? If you wait 60 seconds, does it still occur?

I just noticed something else. As soon as I make the metadata change with exiv2, Shotwell displays the new title in the Basic Information pane – but not under the photo itself. Once I restart Shotwell, the old title is displayed both in the Basic Information pane and under the photo.

Actually I'm only seeing the new title in the Basic Information some of the time – not sure why. In any case, it seems that Shotwell never updates the title under the photo, even after a restart.
