Original Redmine bug id: 2957
Original URL: http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/2957
Searchable id: yorba-bug-2957
Original author: Eric Gregory
Original description:
- Take some photos that are not horizontal
- Import them into Shotwell
- Note that Shotwell displays them with the correct rotation
- Now upload them to Flickr
- Go to flickr.com and see your photos
- Note that when displayed on Flickr, the rotation has been changed
I'm not sure this is exactly a bug in Shotwell or a bug in Flickr, but it seems fixable on our end.

- Priority set to High
Perhaps Flickr is not respecting the EXIF orientation (though that would be a little surprising since you'd think they'd have implemented that capability by now). If that's what's going on, I agree this might be worth fixing by rotating the pixels on our end. Worth investigating more for 0.9.

Adam, I think you're probably right about the cause.
One thing I should mention is that the Flickr Uploadr on Mac has the same behavior as Shotwell -- the images are displayed with the correct location, but when they're uploaded they appear on Flickr unrotated.

Does this happen when uploading a reduced-size photo to Flickr?

I tested it with medium, it seemed to come out correctly.
So apparently this only applies when you upload with the original size.

That tells me its a problem with the Orientation field. When we export a scaled photo, we rotate the pixels. When we export an unscaled (and untransformed) photo, we use only the Orientation field to avoid a lossy re- encode.
Another test, Eric, if you're so inclined: Enhance the photo and upload it as original size. I bet the problem doesn't appear as well.
Weird that Flickr doesn't honor the Orientation field. If we're going to fix this on our end, it means re-encoding the photo every time.

- Status changed from Open to 5
- Resolution set to invalid
- % Done changed from 0 to 0
Eric found a Flickr preference the user can set to cause uploaded images to be rotated according to their metadata. Given that, I don't think we need to change this in Shotwell. Marking invalid.

FYI, here's how to find the rotation setting.
“Your account†-> “Privacy & Permissions†-> “Defaults for new uploads†-> “Auto-rotate your photosâ€
I'm not happy about how they hid this setting and turned it off by default, but at least it's there!
