Original description:
Fred van Zwieten suggested adding a collage feature to Shotwell, similar to Picasa's. A page with screenshots of this feature is here: http://www.computorcompanion.com/LPMArticle.asp?ID=227

I would like to see the functionality of Google Picasa's collage module more or less duplicated. The global design could look like this:
Create a new collage from main menu
As an alternative, select foto's. From the main menu or from the RMB menu you can choose “New Collageâ€.
A new window appears with the selected photo's (or empty when no photo's where selected)
You can drag-n-drop photo's from Shotwell'smain interface into the collage window.
Within the collage window you choose a collage style (picture grid, contact sheet, picture pile). Depending on the chosen style you have possibilities like this:
Arrange photo's (layer management (move up/down, send up/down))
Rotate/grow/shrink
Add nice borders to photo's
Add tekst in typical scrapbook style to canvas
Choose backgrounds (solif, photo, any grahpics file, transparant).
Remove photo's from collage
When done, the collage window closes and the collage is converted to a photo and added to Shotwell's photo collection.
Within Shotwell these collage photo's can be tagged or inserted into an event folder, just like any photo. A set of these collage photo's can then be thought of as a “scrapbookâ€.
Not sure yet about the size of the collage. This could be determined by printer paper size. It is also possible to let the user choose any size and use autoscaling when the uses wishes to print.
This is quite a lot of functionality, so don't expect any result soon. As soon as basic functionality is ready, it can be added to Shotwell, to enable early feedback from users.

A canvas widget seems to be ideal for this sort of functionality because we must move photo's around, scale them, order them, etc. Goocanvas is the only one with vala bindings afaik, so I will use that.
