That should work. What version of Shotwell are you using? Are you on Windows?

I use Shotwell 0.7.2 on Maverick. Maybe the problem could be that I use Dolphin as my file manager rather than Nautilus? I'll try retesting when I get home today.

That's most likely the problem. I'm changing the title to reflect this.
Dolphin is a KDE application, which probably means it uses a different drag- and-drop system. I'm unsure this is something we will solve.
