Kent Tenney has suggested Shotwell ignore duplicates when linking, with the possibility of making this behavior a user option:
I have dupes in my collection which are not mistakes, they are the same file, but live in different contexts.

- Subject changed from Ignore duplicates when linking to allow duplicates when importing
Jim and I talked more about this yesterday. It might be nice to let the user allow duplicates when importing (perhaps even when copying) and to provide tools in Shotwell which let the user cull duplicates from their library in some nice way. The details of how this might work are still fuzzy; I'd like to look more at what other photo programs do. Maybe we can implement this in some way for 0.10.
