It would be great if we could prompt the user to install missing video codecs, just like Totem does. We should be able to do this using gst_install_plugins_async(), gst_install_plugins_sync() and/or related functions. See http://www.gstreamer.net/data/doc/gstreamer/head/gst-plugins- base-libs/html/gst-plugins-base-libs-gstpbutilsinstallplugins.html and bacon- video-widget-gst-missing-plugins.c in the Totem sources.
