Original description:
It's important that Shotwell work well with a window width of 1024 pixels since that's a common netbook resolution. If I make the Shotwell window 1024 pixels wide and adjust the left pane so that it's just wide enough to display dates in the event tree, then all controls fit on the toolbar when I'm showing all photos, which is great. If I adjust the rating filter to display four or more stars, however, the zoom slider disappears because there's no room for it. Possible solutions:
- We could make the stars smaller so that 5 stars will fit.
- When space is short, some of our toolbar button labels could vanish so that the zoom slider can remain.
- We could consider dropping Rotate and/or Slideshow from the toolbar to make room.

- Subject changed from zoom slider doesn't always fit in 1024 horizontal pixels to degrade gracefully when horizontal space is limited
More generally, we should degrade gracefully when horizontal space is limited. Currently when we run out of room the zoom slider disappears; it would be nicer if toolbar labels and/or non-essential toolbar buttons disappeared first.
Bruno also pointed out that
Also, the number of controls you can fit in the toolbar will not only depend on the screen width but also on the user's language: in Russian for instance you can't fit all of the existing controls on a 1024-pixel wide screen.
Some users on the mailing list have also suggested that we should display both a rotate left and a rotate right button if space is plentiful.
